Feriel Mezghani lives and works in Tunis, Tunisia. At first glance, the rich colors and textures
in Mirage give the appearance of a lavish textile fragment. On closer viewing, however, one is
drawn into the center where the dunes of the ever changing desert radiate electrical charges and
suggest an oasis of buildings in the foreground. “A mirage is like a very dangerous game. That
is why that part of the painting is bejeweled or decorated by a fanciful border – ‘check and
mate’. One can win just as one can lose!!” Feriel has a degree in architecture, thus the fine
tuned appreciation for space and embellishment.
